Family of a citizen

This residency category for family members of a Costa Rican citizen allows foreign individuals to obtain legal residency if they have a close family relationship with a Costa Rican citizen. This subcategory is intended for spouses, minor children, parents of Costa Ricans, or adult with a disability that makes them dependent. The aim of this policy is to facilitate family reunification and ensure that direct relatives of Costa Ricans can live and work in the country

Requirements

Valid Passport

Your passport must be current and valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay.

Birth Certificate

Provide an official copy of your birth certificate, which may need to be apostilled or authenticated depending on the country of issue.

Background Check

Submit a criminal background check from your country of residence. This document must show that you have no criminal record and is usually valid for a specific period, often six months.

Relationship Certification

For spouses, a copy of the Costa Rican spouse's ID card and the marriage certificate is required. For other family members, the Costa Rican's birth certificate and the applicant's birth certificate must be provided to demonstrate the direct family relationship

All documents from abroad must be duly legalized, authenticated or apostilled. These documents need to be translated to spanish by authorized translator. Government fees are not included.
